The bench through time

Choose a year to see who served during it. Bars show service periods; a double outline marks presidents. Partial dates retain their source precision.

Dots show everyone who served during the selected year, not necessarily a bench sitting on one day. Where only a year is known, the exact start or end is unknown. Temporary appointments with an unknown end are shown only at the documented date, not as complete terms.

How we know this

This is a selection of rulings, not a complete archive. Every panel and position has a source and access date. Majority describes the result on the stated question; it does not mean every justice shared the same reasoning. Portraits come from Wikimedia Commons under free licences, with the credit and licence on each profile; justices without a free image are shown as a monogram.

The research found little dissent in ordinary panels and much more in expanded panels. A landmark selection therefore does not represent the Court's whole docket. We did not verify a 1% rate across all historical cases and do not present it as a statistic.

The statistical layer is unavailable. Research documents a voting database for 2010 to 2018, but its files and reuse licence could not be obtained. Dissent rates and pair agreement are therefore unavailable.

Source coverage

Every period has gaps. Early sources are thinner; recent rulings do not form a complete series. A verification year is not a coverage year.
