Committees: where laws are written
The plenum votes, but the text is determined in committees. They also oversee the government.
The Knesset has standing committees by subject, such as the Finance Committee, the Constitution Committee, and the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.
All steps in text
- The Knesset has standing committees by subject, such as the Finance Committee, the Constitution Committee, and the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.
- Every committee includes Knesset members from the coalition and the opposition. Ministry representatives, experts and organizations are invited to its discussions.
- The committees examine bills clause by clause and summon ministers and officials to oversee the government’s work.
- Most hearings are public and broadcast; minutes are published. The law excludes Knesset minutes from copyright.
