How a government is formed

The president chooses who will try, the chosen member has limited time, and the Knesset votes at the end. A government can be formed without 61 supporters.

After the official results are published, the president meets representatives of every parliamentary group and hears whom they recommend.

All steps in text
  1. After the official results are published, the president meets representatives of every parliamentary group and hears whom they recommend.
  2. The president tasks a Knesset member with forming a government. The member has 28 days, with a possible extension of no more than 14 days.
  3. If the candidate fails, the president can task someone else, or 61 Knesset members request a candidate of their own. If that also fails, elections are held.
  4. The government is presented to the Knesset and seeks its confidence. It is formed if more members vote for it than against it.

✗Common assumption Forming a government requires 61 supporters.

✓In practice Only more votes for than against are needed in the confidence vote. Having 61 provides stability, but a government can be formed without them.
