The new Knesset’s swearing-in
Two weeks after the election, 120 elected members pledge allegiance and elect a Speaker. Forming a government is a separate process.
The Central Elections Committee publishes the official results, which determine the 120 elected members. Until the new Knesset convenes, the outgoing Knesset continues to serve.
All steps in text
- The Central Elections Committee publishes the official results, which determine the 120 elected members. Until the new Knesset convenes, the outgoing Knesset continues to serve.
- The new Knesset holds its first sitting after publication of the results, within 14 days of election day. According to Knesset data, the 26th Knesset’s first plenum was scheduled for 10 November 2026.
- The president opens the inaugural sitting with a speech, as at the opening of the 25th Knesset on 15 November 2022.
- Each Knesset member declares: “I pledge allegiance to the State of Israel and to fulfil faithfully my mission in the Knesset.” A member who has not yet made the declaration does not yet enjoy the rights of a Knesset member.
- The Knesset elects a Speaker and deputies from its members. Basic Law: The Knesset determines who presides before that election.
- Swearing-in does not form a government. The outgoing government continues to serve until a new government receives the Knesset’s confidence, and that process begins with the president.
